IPTC: Caption A powerful national lobbying group is flexing its muscle in El Monte, where a committee backed by the group has spent nearly $1.3 million to defeat a proposed tax on sugary beverages on the November ballot. The Washington, D.C.-based American Beverage Association has contributed $850,000 to El Monte Citizens Against Beverage Taxes, the committee leading the opposition to the city's proposed soda tax, known as Measure H. That committee has so far spent $1.3 million in its opposition effort - more than 20 times the amount spent by soda tax advocates, according to campaign finance statements released this week.
