A pair of mass shootings with assault weapons in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas led to a renewed national discussion about the proper use of military style weaponry by American civilians. Giving the devil it's due, it seems that the only legitimate use of such weapons is as a toy on the firing range. They're fun to shoot. Gun experts do not believe they are very useful for home defense. Alternatively, some people say that they would be necessary to repel a hostile Invasion force or even the US government in the future after it turns despotic. Given the fact that one application is frivolous and the other one far-fetched, is the occasional mass shooting worth it?
